Joe Normal is an independent DIY rock songwriter, recording artist, producer, and performer whose music lives somewhere between power pop, roots rock, British Invasion, and working-class American rock ’n’ roll.
His songs are melodic, guitar-driven, and unapologetically human — stories about ordinary people, complicated lives, bad jobs, love, loss, family, financial struggles, and the strange business of simply trying to get through the day with a sense of hope.
Joe Normal isn't a nostalgia act. He's an indie rock songwriter making new records, releasing new music, and a visually engaging artist and performer building new shows from the ground up and on screen.
THE ZEROS
Joe's musical history stretches back to the 1980s and the Sunset Strip rock scene, where he was a founding member of the glam-rock band The Zeros.
Originally known as The Double “O” Zeros, the band released its Be A Zero vinyl EP in 1985 before becoming part of the London, England and Hollywood glam-rock scenes. The Zeros went on to sign with Enigma/Restless Records and release two albums, 4 3 2 1 The Zeros and Names Vol. 1.
The band became part of the colorful Hollywood rock underground of the era, sharing stages and crossing paths with artists and bands including Guns N' Roses, Warrant, Dramarama, Jane's Addiction, Poison, and others.
The Zeros' music also found its way into some unexpected places. A song from the band's early catalog was used as a theme by Howard Stern. The band also collaborated with punk royalty Stiv Bators, Brian James, and Lords of The New Church on the Mike Nesmith film Tapeheads, contributing and recording its main song, “Mister MX-7.”
But Joe's story didn't end with the Sunset Strip.
He is also former touring member of 80's hitmakers Dramarama, “Anything, Anything (I'll Give You)”, performing with the band at major Lost 80's Live festivals and large-scale venues across the U.S., as well as their 2018 England tour.
FROM GLAM ROCK TO JOE NORMAL
After departing The Zeros in 1992, Joe continued writing, recording, producing, and performing in a variety of musical worlds, including The Hutchinsons, a sibling-based group with his brother and Zeros drummer Jimmy (Insane) Hutchinson. Together, they helped lead the L.A. power-pop resurgence of the early to mid-’90s inviting comparisons to Jellyfish and Urge Overkill. They released a self-titled EP followed by a full length album Plastic Fruit & Popcorn in 1997 on Nashville's RTG Label and after touring, they recorded SuperLoFiQuadroTrakDemoTape, which circulated as a cassette-only release.
When the brothers disbanded in 1999, Joe continued on as HUTCH with members of Imperial Drag, The Exies, and The Flesh Eaters, signing with Smile Records to release the album Turn It Around. HUTCH also appeared on Chef Bobby Flay's Food Nation, representing the Los Angeles music scene. That period led to a songwriting collaboration with Sammy Hagar, with the resulting song becoming the title track of Hagar's album Not 4 Sale.
In 2009, he formed Cold Blue Rebels, a horror/psychobilly project with members of fellow Hollywood glam bands Jetboy, The Zeros, and Glamour Punks. They released two albums through Horror High Records and toured extensively opening for acts Wednesday 13, The Biters, Mad Sin, and The Quakes until 2014, when Joe opted to continue developing his own songwriting, identity, and voice outside the punk energy of the scene.
Eventually that voice became Joe Normal — a name that says almost the opposite of what the music looks and sounds like.
Joe Normal is anything but ordinary.
The songs combine classic and early American rock roots with power-pop hooks, jangly guitars, storytelling, and a distinctly DIY attitude. The influences range from The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Raspberries, and Big Star to The Replacements, Urge Overkill, and the great British and American songwriters who understood that a three-minute rock song could deliver you from life's troubles and unite common folks around a relatable subject or idea.
THE ANYTOWN'RS
Joe Normal's current band project, Joe Normal & The Anytown'rs, takes that songwriting approach into a louder, stripped-down power-trio setting.
The Anytown'rs are built around songs first: guitars loud, hooks intact, and no unnecessary musical gymnastics.
The band's music is rooted in the idea that rock ’n’ roll doesn't need to be complicated to be meaningful.
It can be about going to work.
It can be about falling in love.
It can be about getting older.
It can be about wanting something better.
It can be about the person sitting next to you on the bus, the guy working the late shift, the girl you never called back, or the feeling that maybe tomorrow will finally be different.

THE MUSIC NOW
Today Joe Normal works independently from Southern California, writing and recording new material, producing his own releases, making videos, and assembling live bands around the songs.
His catalog spans decades, but the focus is firmly on what's happening now.
Recent and upcoming work includes new Joe Normal recordings as well as releases from Joe Normal & The Anytown'rs, with the music continuing to move between power pop, janglepop, pubrock, roots rock, and straight-ahead guitar-driven rock ’n’ roll.
Joe also continues to collaborate with other independent musicians and artists, because the DIY spirit that shaped his earliest years in music remains at the center of what he does.
There is no major-label machine behind Joe Normal.
There doesn't need to be… nor does he want there to be.
The records get made.
The songs get released.
The videos get shot.
Joe keeps telling his own story and the work keeps moving forward.
